Abstract

This study aimed to analyze implications of the love and maternal devices in two cases of women experiencing domestic violence who sought urgent protective measures at a Police Station for the Protection of Children, Adolescents, Women, and the Elderly in Santa Catarina. The cases involved two mothers who had already separated from the perpetrator of violence. The study revealed that their main motivation was the care of their children, which also influenced their decision to remain in abusive relationships. The feeling of guilt was present, as they perceived themselves as not being good enough as mothers when faced with the need to sever the bonds between father and child in order to protect themselves. Thus, the presence of the love and maternal devices was observed, revealing the constant position of caregiving and self-sacrifice imposed on women. The importance of a support network for these women to leave a situation of domestic violence was evident. Finally, there was identified that professionals assisting these women should be equipped with gender discussions and consider the love and maternal devices in their interventions.
